FEIJENOORD

Quality yet affordable housing for Woonstad at the Rotterdam Feijenoord district by Hans van der Heijden Architect.

This rigorous brick project by HVDHA represents a total of 26 dwellings. 12 three-bedroom-two-floor maisonettes are situated at ground floor level of Persoonshaven street. The northern street corner dwelling has an additional room in an extension of the main block, allowing for a smooth connection to the adjoining housing. At the upper level one can find 13 identical four-bedroom-two-floor maisonettes.

The project is clad with brickwork in three different colours. Purple-red clinkers, set in tile bond, form a plinth and ressault-like motifs. The façades above have alternating planes in bright-orange and beige bricks. They are applied in a random brick setting with minimal vertical joints. Curly steel railings and precast concrete copings, sills and gargoyles establish restrained ornaments.
